Conclusion
Do you know that…….
7 out of every 10 HH in Ghana still use firewood or charcoal (GMHS, 2018)
18,000 deaths in Ghana are attributed to smoke from using charcoal and firewood (GACC, accessed 27/10/18)
A HH could save up to 15 cedis monthly by using an ICS
Five times as much wood is used to produce a unit of charcoal
LPG is cheaper than charcoal (Yes, almost 1.6 times cheaper at retail price)
What has been done and what is being done for the sector?
There have been several efforts since late 1980’s to promote the
production and use of clean cooking technologies and fuels. These
include inter alia:
▪ Ahibenso improved charcoal stove project (1989-1994)
▪ LPG programme (1989 – present)
▪ CSIR improved woodstove project (Early 2000)
▪ VRA climate stove initiative (Early 2000)
▪ Enterprise works/Vita charcoal stove project (2002 – present)
▪ Ghana Alliance of Clean cookstoves (2012 – present)
▪ SNV and GIZ support programmes (On-going)
